The Primal Cycle Repeats itself

Published on 31 October 2025 at 22:48

Have you ever wanted to become a part of the story from a book you read? Perhaps a tale of dark fantasy or a horror story with the rage of Gothic elements, or maybe take on the role of a fierce teenager or young person whose rebellious character leaves no one indifferent, young or old?

Today, we will have an unusual visit from two special guests. One is a humble and loyal servant to his lady, and the other is a fierce young girl searching for her beloved, albeit reluctantly.

Here begins a path leading to a long-forgotten adventure of mystery and excitement in the heart of the golden era of PS2: Primal. Unleash your primal synergy.

Before our guests' arrival, let’s delve into two major discussions. Firstly, how we stumbled upon and acquainted ourselves with the game, and secondly, getting an answer to a question that has intrigued our minds.

It was an evening among close friends. Discussions on games from earlier times filled the air, with drinks engaging the influential and enriching circumstantial memories. A single word emerged around the table: Primal. What is it, one might wonder. Perhaps an animation series from Samurai Jack’s creator Genndy Tartakovsky? No, it was a game.

The very next day, info on the game was searched for, pictures were examined, and a disc titled "Splatter Edition" from German eBay was found. In English, this version is called "Collector’s Edition".

During our search, we discovered other collectible items that align with today’s collector’s standards.      For example, this chest with a letter.

We also found a promo comics books published in limited copies as a prerelease advertisement for the game, telling the stories that awaited players once they begin.

Oh, yes, before I forget, the manual inside the game case provides players with significant insights into in-game mechanics. But if you don’t have one, don’t worry. Here, you can access the full guide with all the necessary info. Trust us, dear reader, in-game you may easily miss certain elements or forget their existence, leading to some tricky moments as you progress in the story.

Now, where are they? Oh well, let's discuss our question.

Some of you may know a studio named SCE Studio Cambridge, later renamed Guerrilla Cambridge. They not only made the game Primal but also the MediEvil series for PS1 and PSP. Guerrilla was responsible for the remaster on PS4 and LittleBigPlanet as well. Yes, Sony is still developing LittleBigPlanet despite closing down the author studio.

Of course, their portfolio includes many other games, but we’ll focus on the ones we've mentioned. Further details are easily searchable if you're curious :)

We sought to understand why Sony decided to close SCE Studio Cambridge. Despite their history of creating popular games like MediEvil and their collaboration project with Media Molecule, LittleBigPlanet, the studio had been struggling to meet sales targets with their newer titles, leading to the decision to close.

It's ironic, isn’t it? Investing heavily in marketing and building a loyal fan base, only to later close the studio, feels like a contradiction. But that’s the often harsh reality of business decisions—sometimes they don’t align with fan expectations or the legacy of the games.

Sony's restructuring efforts were aimed at focusing on fewer, but more impactful, projects to ensure the company's long-term success in a highly competitive market. LittleBigPlanet aimed to be a family-friendly, engaging, and creative game that showcased the capabilities of the PlayStation platform, making it a valuable asset for Sony.

I told you we will be late..." Scree

Relax, Rocky, we only missed the boring part. Besides, aren't we the ones for whom they are waiting? Jenn

Uf, sometimes convincing you is just a waste of time.

Ah, and there they come. Let me introduce you to our special guests... Storyteller

Oh, there is no need, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Scree, and my fellow companion here...

I don't need any help either. My name is Jennifer, but I prefer Jenn. It suits me better than all those girlish aspects.

Right, so Scree will you be our guide through the Nexus? Our readers here are interested in discovering the Oblivion and its four demonic realms where you and Jennifer, oops excuse me Jenn, had your former adventures.

Sure, but first I suppose the mentioning of Oblivion would be only necessary or did you...am, can I ask how to address you then?

My apologies, I am a storyteller.

Ah, then I shall continue. Oblivion has a heart, a center known as the Tower of Nexus. From here, the four demonic realms can be entered through Rift Gates.

These gates allow you to visit the realms, but first, they need to be activated.

Activating? How do you activate them?

Let me show you, then. First, I will need to find a proper spot to breach the veil between our realms.

It will take some time for him, till then I can share my own viewpoints.

Sure, it will be interesting.

Oblivion itself isn’t much to look at—just a void where the forces of Light and Dark duke it out for territory.

Arella stands for light and order, while Abaddon’s all about darkness and chaos.

These forces maintain Oblivion’s balance, playing with the life spans of its inhabitants, either nurturing them or letting them wither away.

Arella told me that the eternal war for control over the Nexus would rage on until the end of time. Neither light can fully dominate, nor can darkness.

That’s why Arella’s followers and trusted warriors put their lives on the line to stop evil from taking over the realms.

But let’s be real, nothing ever stays the same, nor does it work out as planned forever.

Scree is one of Arella's most loyal servants. If not for him and his bravery, well, neither I would stand here nor would the forces be stable.

And between us, I really like him. He's saved my skin more times than I can count. But let’s keep that between us. I wouldn’t want him to know I’m going all soft on him.

My mouth is sealed.

Here, all is done and ready for travel.

Now, we will see Oblivion, the place where it all happened—the story of the game, I mean. We'll travel to the Nexus and visit all four realms ourselves.

Take a deep breath; the atmosphere is about to change.

Stepping through the Rift Gate and teleporting to Oblivion. Now we can take our time to enjoy the sound of the void and gaze at the view.

Did you know, Oblivion isn't just a battleground of light and dark? It's actually a convergence of energies from all realms. This place—though it may look empty and desolate—is teeming with raw power. Every realm contributes its essence to Oblivion, creating a delicate balance that we must strive to protect.

As we proceed further, we can witness the ancient stone structures surrounding us—a sand-colored area with a bridge that countless intriguing individuals must have crossed before us.

But there is a keeper here, whose immortal life leaves no room for the thoughts that visitors like us might express. His name is Chronoss; he is the keeper of the Nexus, and his main task is to control the fusion of energy.

Hey, Rocky, are you certain that they want to listen to your historical records? They came to gain an experience, not to listen to lessons. Let's roll in; we have an old fellow to visit in Nexus.

Indeed, our journey begins.

You might think that two opposites like them would hardly get along, but their journey has forged a strong bond. Their adventures brought them closer, teaching them to trust and rely on each other—qualities that are the bedrock of a true friendship.

We walk inside the tower, where the towering dark columns make the air feel cold and the atmosphere evokes a sense of loneliness.

Without him, the delicate balance of energies would either overflow chaotically or extinguish entirely, leading to the collapse of the Nexus and its connected realms.  Let us take a closer look at him

Helloo, how's your doings, Chronoss? Silent as always; it’s his typical approach.

It’s said that his silence is a form of meditation, keeping his focus sharp and his control unyielding. He is deeply connected to the realms through the energy he controls. His very existence is tied to the balance of power in Oblivion. If he falters, so do the realms he maintains.

Yeah, yeah, Mr. Silent and Mysterious. Can we get to the part where we do something interesting?

I shall agree with Jenn on this. Scree, when will you take us through the next Rift Gate?

Ah, of course. I will  guide you through the four realms, but first...

Ahhh, no, not another history lesson! Come on, Scree, they want to see the demonic realms here...

But Jenn, the most observant ones have noticed the same symbol you bear as a tattoo on your back all over the Nexus.

Alright, alright, have it your way. Just be quick.

Thank you, but I will need your help here.

Oh, wait, and how do I help here?

Just turn your back and crouch, and I will show the meaning of those lines. Now you can see that the circle            keeps unchanged lines all over it, but in truth, each segment symbolizes the four realms.                       Scree points to the diagram.

These segments are named Solum, Aquis, Aetha, and Volca. The circle in the center represents the Nexus. This drawing is not just a representation of balance; it serves as a linking sign, showing that we all bear a part of our primal energy. And that, I will leave to Jenn to demonstrate what I mean by primal energies.

Thanks, Rocky. If you’re done guiding your finger through my back, I suggest we start with Solum and then go in a circle to visit each place.

Agreed.

As we take our steps over these stairs and take pleasure in viewing the entrance corridor to Solum's Rift Gate, I should add a line from myself.

Sadly, we haven't found any information on the cultural signs or historical emblems that might have inspired this symbol. It's a funny thought that Jenn isn't the only one bearing this tattoo; we've seen it on other people's skin.

Whether this sign was a vision of an artist or a group of artists, for many, this symbol represents the synergy we all search for in ourselves. Embracing our primal energy—understanding and utilizing it rather than fearing it—fits perfectly with the themes of self-discovery and growth that Primal embodies. Some learn how to control it, while others only think they know themselves. In truth, we are beasts, and we will always remain such. But we shouldn't be afraid of it; we should learn from it and use it for ourselves.

Look carefully as we will finally witness the process of powering a Rift Gate.

Gate is active, we are ready.

Brrr, I forgot to mention, Solum is a realm of eternal night and ever-snowing winter.

The winter never ends here, and sunlight is never seen. If you aren’t used to feeling cold air or experiencing long winter nights, then the unending nightfall of Solum won’t be suited for you to live in.

Ehhe, well, sometimes being made of rock is better than having a body of warm flesh.

Oh, you will get used to it. Not that it will get any warmer or cozier.

Come on, we have a lot to see, and I’ll explain how the civilization of hunters here survives by the rules of Solum’s harsh nature.

As we step further, the snow crunches beneath our feet, the cold air biting at our faces. We arrive at a cave, marked with several drawings on the stones around it, red deer standing out.

The hunt is not just a necessity but a way of life, a means to assert dominance over the unforgiving environment.

Inside, a few hunters and a shaman gather around a small fire pit at the center, the dark cave illuminated by the flickering flames.

The hunters of Solum live by the harsh rules of this realm's nature. They gather together for warmth and protection, relying on their collective strength to survive.

The red deer markings you see here symbolize the spirit of the hunt, a reminder of the balance between life and death in this eternal winter.

In Solum, the hunt is the core of existence. It's more than survival—it's tradition, pride, and a rite of passage. The hunters believe that the land is intertwined with their rulers. The old king's life force sustains the land.

If the old king isn’t replaced by a new one when his time comes, the energy balance collapses, leading to the decay of the land.

Thus, the hunt and the transition of power are vital for the realm’s stability. The king’s death and the rise of a new ruler keep the earth from collapsing into chaos.

Fffhhh, around this fire pit you will get warmer, believe me. I live in a place where I experience all four seasons, but even I can't outstand this cold with or without warm clothes.

Scree, if people live by the way of hunt, what purpose did the abandoned buildings we saw serve?

We don’t know exactly how ancient the interactions between the human realm and Oblivion are. Maybe demons have been among us for much longer than we can imagine. Anyway, it looks like we won't need a translation from Scree.

Scree looked towards the shaman, approached him, and asked the question in Etherean—the native language of Solum. Scree is the only one here who can speak in more than one language. While playing the game, we come to understand that most citizens can understand English, but it's the unique atmosphere surrounding us that prevails.

These buildings were once thriving centers of life and activity. Our ancestors built them as places of gathering, trade, and learning.

The shaman, wrapped in heavy furs, raises his gaze to meet with ours and speaks in a deep, resonant voice, gesturing towards the abandoned buildings visible in the distance.

However, as the hunt became the central focus of our existence, many of these structures were abandoned.

The hunt sustains us and defines us, but it also requires us to constantly move, adapting to the variable cold and the needs of our prey.

The collapse of the earth you mentioned is linked to the balance of power. A new king must ascend before the old one departs, ensuring stability. When this balance is disrupted, the very land we depend on begins to falter. It's a cycle as old as Solum itself.

Would it mean that hunting isn't as old as the ancestral buildings?

Indeed, it is not, the shaman replies. While the hunt has always been a crucial part of our survival, the purpose and focus have evolved over time.

Over generations, the harshness of Solum’s environment dictated a shift in priorities. The hunt became our central way of life, driven by necessity and the demands of our ever-changing world.

The buildings you see were erected in a period where community and knowledge were as vital as the hunt itself.

Alright, that's good to know. Scree, can we visit some hunting plains? I want to hunt some beasts around here and show how I transform into my Ferai form. Maybe we can visit the ancestral grounds too.

Without their search for Prince Jared, the rite of passage couldn't be completed. The land would fall into chaos, and who knows how dark it would get afterward.

But we've dwelled on this topic for too long; we should proceed and witness Jenn's skills in fighting.

A comfy campfire was left behind, and we returned to the coldness of plains and mountains.

Scree asks the shaman for permission to enter the ancestral grounds. The shaman seems surprised but then nods. You see, certain places are considered sacred and are abandoned for general passage, even for hunting. Jenn and Scree are held in high regard here because of the help they provided for this land.

The pale trees, without leaves to bear them, rocks covered in frost, the howling winter air singing its song create a hauntingly beautiful landscape.

The roaring sounds of Shrieks echo around us, making us feel surrounded. If you have a dagger like Jenn does, you will have a chance for survival.

These beasts are ferocious and relentless. Their presence makes you reconsider venturing into the darkness. Not that it will frighten you, but it will make you feel uncomfortable. And there’s nothing to be ashamed of because Jenn would declare to lighten the dark areas for her to proceed further.

The fire can burn out quickly in strong winds or if it gets wet, leaving you vulnerable. It’s one of those realistic touches that make the game so immersive and engaging.

While I was explaining all this to you, we not only got to our intended place but truly felt the presence of Shrieks around us. Through the cold air, Jenn's voice cuts out: Time to show you what I’m made of.

Scree looks at me motionlessly and asks to stay with him aside, adding, Let Jenn handle it.

In our rescue comes Scree. His rock body can be transformed into a stable rock. It will not only help when Jenn needs to climb up or down with the rope from high ground stands, but it will also serve him well in preventing enemies from attacking him. Speaking of light, in Solum, with its eternal darkness, creatures like Shrieks thrive without much threat to themselves. Using a fire pit can indeed help you cross the land without having to fight them, but it also has its risks.

The environment itself becomes a character you have to contend with, adding layers of strategy and tension to your journey.

Her movements are swift and powerful, each strike precise. The Shrieks' glowing eyes dim as they vanish into nothingness under her relentless attacks. Jenn makes her final move with a critical hit, ensuring the beasts don't regenerate and return to full health.

Jenn's eyes begin to glow, and she transforms into her Ferai form. With a fierce roar, she charges at the Shrieks.

And remember, the critical hit or last blow is necessary for you, whether it's Shrieks or more formidable enemies that will be encountered later in the game.

By progression of the story in Solum,  false Queen Devena' s personal guard,  made formidable foes, especially when there were five or seven of them at once surrounding Jenn.

Despite her skills and possible combo attacks, you have only a slight fighting chance in her demonic forms. Because this game intends for you to learn from it and become better at understanding it, that's why the manual is a handy helper.

Jenn heavily breathes in the cold air, feeling a strong warmth spreading through her. Slowly but intentionally, she returns to her former self, transforming back from her Ferai form.

Well, how did you like the performance? she asks with a grin.

Scree nods approvingly. Well done, Jenn. Shall we move on to something else?

Indeed, with the history lesson and your impressive performance, I think we've seen all there is for this realm. Let's head to the next one and visit the Undines in Aquis. Each time you complete your job in one realm, you will return to the Nexus. From here, the next gate opens before us as we approach Aquis, the realm of the water inhabitants.

Mmmm, ahhh, take a deep breath of fresh air. It's a special lagoon with soft sand and warm sun. The crystal-clear waters of Aquis beckon, inviting adventurous souls to explore its serene depths and discover its mechanisms of water filtration. Not that everyone enjoys the thought of going underwater.

Right as it is, Scree, this time you go underwater without me. I want to enjoy the beach. Well, I can hardly breathe underwater myself either, so I would need Jenn's ability to transform into Undine form or I can stay up here and warm up after  Solum's coldness.

Scree gives us a thoughtful look for a moment, then nods and prepares himself for the dive. With a splash of water, he disappears into the depths.

Jenn laughs, There goes a rock stomp! She chuckles, Mhehe, he makes you laugh from the simplest things. Ahh, now I will make up leeway by taking a sunbath.

Rolling cozily next to her and falling into the relaxation of a daydream, Jenn seems to snooze down a bit. This is the perfect time to interrupt with our questioning. Dazzling sometimes helps to provide a chance to recall memories. It may help us see Aquis from Jenn's point of view, since we may experience it only through gameplay.

Let's gently nudge Jenn from her dozing state. She swings her hand before her face and, with a slightly annoyed but playful tone, says, What? Can't you see I'm on vacation? Come on, Jenn. Can you tell us about the experience you gained from Aquis? How was it to breathe underwater and swim like a swift water creature? Was it a challenge or an enjoyment?

Well, to begin with, I'm not used to water—a fear, someone may say. My stepfather didn’t give me the chance to experience lady-like activities like horse rides or swim lessons. But I must admit, in Undine form it felt peaceful—so different from diving as a human.

The first thing that struck me was the beauty of water; it was so clear, and the light filtering through it made everything look like it was sparkling.

Jenn leans partly up. We faced many challenges there, from navigating the underwater tunnels to reach the water purification system, to having to deal with the Undines, whose minds had been corrupted by the unfiltered water they had been left in.

There were even strange coral-like creatures attached to the walls in tight tunnels; it wasn't easy to pass through them with a swift swim. She pauses, a small smile playing on her lips.

And there was that one puzzle... it was one of the first filtration stations. But it took us forever to figure out how to make it work and how to open the gate, leading deeper into the toxicated lagoon.

But the view on the other side was worth it. There were a few islands and even a pond with a beach coming from it. Oh right, and those giant crabs on the beach islands!"

Her eyes twinkle. Aquis tested us in ways I wouldn't have imagined, but it also proved that beauty and danger can be found even in the water world.

Mh, it truly sounds magnificent. You know, Jenn, you certainly are one of those lucky people. Not everyone has a chance to experience such a variety of feelings in life. Becoming a part of a greater story is truly a remarkable journey

Jenn looks slightly surprised, her lips curling into a warm smile. Thanks.

For now, let's let Jenn rest. In terms of gameplay, Jenn has shared insights on many quirky aspects we encountered.

We’ll await Scree’s return to share knowledge about the Undines and their way of life.

In the meantime, let’s talk about water levels and special gameplay involving fighting and swimming. They have evolved across different games.

Take Rayman Legends, for example —it’s a younger game than our next examples, but it involves levels fully made of water environments and they aren’t any easier in navigation than the surface or air levels. However, they are beautifully made and remain memorable even after such a while.

Another great example that comes to mind is a lesser-known game called Hydrophobia, whose main goal was to create the best water physics at that time. Does it still have the best water physics? Considering the point of interaction with water, which responds to movement, I think that yes, it still has the best water physics mechanics created for a game.

The developers used their own program, the HydroEngine, to make it possible. This proprietary engine was designed to create realistic fluid dynamics, making the water interact dynamically with the game environment.

The patent, so to speak, remains theirs and cannot be replicated with Maya or Unreal. Swimming mechanics in Hydrophobia were designed to reflect the main protagonist’s initial fear and gradually improving proficiency, making the experience of swimming unique.

This creates a contrast with the more straightforward mechanics seen in games like Grand Theft Auto or Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, where swimming feels very similar to moving on land, with slight differences in controls.

Games like Ratchet and Clank use water to add depth to exploration and puzzles. For finding treasures or having further exploration, it requires players to return once they obtain equipment like the O2 mask.

The purpose of these examples is to highlight that Primal has one of the most finely crafted water-swimming mechanics. You’ll need to get a feel for the movement, which is different from surface navigation, but once you grasp swimming up and down, you’ll understand how to direct your fighting skills against opponents. It’s a delicately made gameplay attribute showcasing how to integrate water elements into a game.

Speak of the devil and he shall appear. Hey, Scree! How’s Sanctuary? Scree emerges from the water, shaking off droplets and preparing to share his findings. I have some news, one great and one a bit sad. The good news is that Sanctuary is full of life, fresh water flows through the poisoned water, soon it will be clean and habitable, the water filtration system is working under the engineers' watch and Queen Aino sends her greetings and well wishes to you, Jenn.

Jenn, half-asleep, mumbles with a smile, Oh, thanks.

And the sad news is that there’s no way to lead you, storyteller, into the depths of the water.

Oh, no need to be saddened. Jenn has already shared her experiences of the underwater pathways, giving us a vivid picture of what it's like.

To maintain the purity of their water, they developed advanced filtration systems.

Queen Aino, the benevolent ruler of Sanctuary, is known for her wisdom. Under her guidance, the Undines have flourished and maintained a harmonious balance. It was with her leadership that these filtration systems, which keep Sanctuary thriving, were developed.

We take a walk along the beach, and Scree, dedicating himself to the story, reveals some fascinating facts:

Undines are the inhabitants of Aquis, and their realm is entirely submerged in water. Their adaptation to this environment helped them build Sanctuary, the underwater city designed to ensure their survival and prosperity.

These systems draw in water from the surrounding environment, filter out impurities and toxins, and release clean water back into the ecosystem

Scree continues:

The Undines, deeply attuned to their environment, possess unique abilities to manipulate water. This magic, combined with their resourcefulness, allowed them to create and maintain these intricate filtration systems.

Over centuries, they’ve refined these systems, blending their natural affinity for water with ancient knowledge passed down through generations. Their architecture and tools perfectly reflect their aquatic lifestyle, with structures seamlessly integrated into the natural environment.

With these detailed insights into the Undines' way of life, our visit to Aquis comes to a close. As we return to the Rift Gate, Scree stirs Jen awake with a gentle nudge. The light from the gates fades, leaving us within the silence of the vault. Our path lies towards the next massive gates. From here, a familiar hum resonates, signaling the journey to the third realm. The glowing Rift Gates illuminate the path to Aetha—the realm of the wraiths. Shrouded in darkness and enigma, it is a place where new challenges await our brave protagonists. Steeling our hearts and piquing our curiosity, we step forward alongside Jen and Scree into the unknown, ready to face the trials that Aetha has in store.

Aetha, a place where a spine-chilling shiver is an immediate feeling from first impression. The air is thick with mist, and the dim light barely pierces through the perpetual gloom. For now, the weather holds—a heavy fog weaving around us, casting eerie shadows but sparing us from immediate rain.

Jen muttered with relief, as if we wouldn’t notice, At least it’s not raining right away like last time.

But as they say, call the devil and the devil comes. As we make our way deeper into town, the calm begins to shift. A distant rumble of thunder hints at the unpredictability of Aetha’s climate. After a while, fat raindrops begin to splatter against the rocky terrain, and a distant voice from Jen cursing under her breath reaches our ears,

Damn you, it’s raining again! This sudden downpour reflects the chaotic nature of the wraiths that call this realm home. What, you thought I couldn’t share some facts of my own? Not only has Scree prepared for facing trials and for revealing this enigmatic world. I had made my researches as well.

If only rain were the worst of our worries in this place. Suddenly, from the roofs and walls of the houses, disturbingly ugly, bat-like creatures known as Vyraks climbed down. Compared to the Malkai, these vile creatures, with their grotesque wings and twisted forms, are even more hideous.

While the Malkai possess a brutal, primal elegance with their matted fur and fierce demeanor, the Vyraks' grotesque wings and twisted forms evoke pure revulsion. Malkai, though savage, exhibit a deadly grace and a predatory intelligence that make them formidable hunters. They move with fluid precision, their eyes burning with a feral hunger. In contrast, the Vyraks embody chaos and corruption.

Their eyes gleam with malevolent intelligence, and their screeches send shivers down the spine. Unlike the Malkai's calculated pack mentality, the Vyraks seem to revel in disorder, each one driven by a twisted will to spread fear and despair.

Jenn prepares herself for an upcoming fight, transforming into her demon form called Wraith.

In this form, she possesses an astonishing speed that makes her nearly impossible to track; a mere purple streak of light is all that marks her passage as she darts around her enemies.

Her movements become almost a blur, fluid and graceful, as her whip slices through the air with deadly elegance, perfectly mirroring the true nature of this realm.

Her abilities in this form are enviable. She can manipulate the swiftness of time, giving her a chance to outmaneuver her foes. In her arsenal, she wields a whip, which she uses with lethal precision to strike from a distance, and a dagger for close combat, ensuring she can dispatch enemies both near and far in the blink of an eye. This power allows her to execute attacks with lightning speed, making her a formidable opponent.

Jenn's mastery of these skills becomes evident as she faces the Vyraks. With her extraordinary agility and time-manipulating abilities, she outmaneuvers the grotesque creatures, her whip and dagger working in tandem to dispatch them with unerring accuracy. Each strike is a testament to her prowess, leaving no doubt about her dominion over these monstrous beings.

Before Scree transformed into stone, he politely said, Stay alert, Jen. They may be chaotic, but they are not without strategy.

However, amidst the chaos of battle, one of the Vyraks manages to get too close, delivering a powerful blow to Jen. The impact leaves her with a deeply painful injury. She stumbles, her demonic energy waning.

Realizing the seriousness of her injury, Jen has two options: continue the fight in human form or use another ability from Scree. She storms towards him. Sensing the urgency, Scree swiftly responds. He channels the energy he’s gathered from their fallen foes and from Demonic Essence Crystals.

Using a special crystal, known as the Primordial Energy Crystal, specifically designed for refining and amplifying energy, he enhances its potency. Jen absorbs this potent energy, revitalizing her demonic form and healing her wounds. Renewed and revitalized, she prepares to face the remaining Vyraks with even greater determination. Sadly, those crystal aren't used in the game as described, but it exists in the game's lore. With renewed vigor, Jen launches a final assault on the remaining Vyraks. Her whip cracks through the air with fierce precision, and her dagger strikes true. One by one, the grotesque creatures fall, unable to match her speed and strength. The battlefield grows silent as the last Vyrak hits the ground.

Jen's heavily breathing surveys the scene, her demonic form glowing with residual energy. Scree, now safely transformed back into his movable form, watches over her, his expression one of pride. When you see Jen’s triumphant stance, it becomes hard to resist at least a small cheer for her:

Bravo, Jen! That was incredible! You’ve shown those Vyraks what true power looks like!

Absolutely, well done, Jen. Your skill and courage are unparalleled. Bravo!

Jen holds a smile, feeling a sense of accomplishment and relief washing over her. Thanks, Scree. I couldn’t have done it without your help.

With the immediate threat vanquished, Jen and Scree take a moment to catch their breath and acknowledge their victory. I can only hold great respect for both of them, because together they make an unstoppable team!

Scree looks at Jen, his eyes reflecting admiration. You were amazing today, Jen.

Jen nods, a glint of determination in her eyes. On to the next challenge?

Scree nods in agreement, a hint of a smile on his stony face. Always.

Right now, we are in the outskirts of Aetha City, an area just outside the inner part and the center, the heart of Aetha City itself. The beasts we encountered still lurk, searching for their prey. Before Jen's and Scree's arrival, this city was overrun with these creatures, and it seemed that guards struggled to maintain control as we wouldn't see any living soul on the streets. The current state of the city is uncertain, the answer lying beyond these massive doors.

Scree, I can't open this on my own. Can you help?

Scree nodded, his voice filled with determination.  Let's do it together, Jen.

They positioned themselves on either side of the gate, ready to push with all their strength.

On three. One, two, three!

Their combined effort yielded results. They heaved the gate open, its weight yielding to their determination. As the gate creaked open, we stepped through to enter the inner grounds of Aetha City.

Closer to the center, we saw guards with rifle butt stationed on higher ground, maintaining a vigilant watch over the city. On the ground, we passed a group of patrolling guards, mostly all women.

If you wonder why these long-height women guardians, known as Valkyrie' s are patrolling instead of men, it’s because these women can manipulate time, allowing them to enclose their enemy faster than the blink of an eye.

The city feels more secure now. The guards have regained their purpose, protecting the people instead of preying on them.

Their scimitars cut through the air with elegance and deadly precision, making them, if not the most powerful, then certainly one of the most deadly warriors Aetha can have. The color of their armor signifies their rank and authority, but their combat abilities remain consistent.

It's nice to see them not trying to skewer us for a change.

At least here, the watchful eyes of the guards allowed us to walk without problems. We enclosed closer to the center and encountered a set of heavy gates. These gates separate the inner part from the center of Aetha City and are guarded by imposing warriors known as Door Wardens. Clad in resplendent golden armor, the Wardens wield large shields that gleamed under the faint light, making them look almost impenetrable.

Their shields, known as Aegis Shields, are designed to absorb and deflect attacks, providing formidable defense. In their other hand, they carry a morning star, heavy enough to sweep from side to side, yet when handled properly, it delivers lethal wounds to their enemies.

Jennifer tightened her grip on her dagger. Suddenly, the massive gates behind the guards began to creak open. The sound of the doors groaning echoed through the chamber, sending a shiver down my spine.

The heavy guardans stood their ground, their imposing figures a testament to the protection of the city's heart. We approached them with caution, ready for whatever challenge lay ahead. As Jennifer and Scree cautiously approached the heavy guardians, a familiar sense of déjà vu washed over me. I recognized the situation from their earlier encounter in the prison beneath the castle. The atmosphere was tense, just as it had been back then.

The old man, now revealed as a captain, stepped forward.     Step aside and let them through, he commanded.                  The wardens obeyed, allowing us to walk in.

As we moved forward, we passed through a graveyard just outside the town. The ancient tombstones, carved from luminescent stone, gave off a faint, eerie glow. Dense foliage and swirling mist surrounded the area, creating an atmosphere thick with history and somber reverence. Each step we took seemed to disturb the silence, echoing through the graveyard.

Jennifer paused for a moment, her eyes scanning the surroundings.

Do you remember when we were last here? she asked softly.

Scree nodded, touching the side of his head where he once lost his ear.

How could I forget? he replied with a wry smile.

It was right here, wasn't it?

Jennifer glanced at a nearby statue, the memory flooding back. She had cut down the rope to lower the cage containing a skeleton, hoping to grant an unresting spirit its deserved peace and gain wraith power in return. But the cage shifted unexpectedly, slicing through Scree's ear. The look of shock and pain on his face had haunted her ever since.

I'm still sorry about that, she said quietly, guilt evident in her voice.

Scree shook his head. "It's in the past, Jen. We've faced far worse since then.

Jennifer nodded, feeling a renewed sense of determination. They had come a long way since that moment, and they couldn't afford to dwell on past mistakes.

Together, they pressed on, the entrance to the heart of the castle now in sight.

The ancient architecture of the city's core came into view, with walls adorned with intricate carvings telling tales of a bygone era.

Navigating through the garden's maze and the castle's corridors, which took a shape similar to a labyrinth, was a challenge in itself.

They both vividly remembered the harrowing mission to rescue Jennifer and return her Gauntlets of Power.

"So, Scree," I began, my curiosity piqued, "Why exactly did Count Raum need Jennifer?

It was filled with tricky puzzles, some of which required Jennifer and Scree to solve together, while others forced Scree to run through on his own. Meanwhile, Jennifer defended herself from enemies with her skilled combat abilities.

Scree's expression turned serious. Count Raum was a cruel and sadistic ruler, he explained. He and Countess Empusa discovered a dark secret: by drinking the blood of their own people, they could become invincible and live forever.

But Jennifer, she's a Hybrid—a rare being with transformative abilities. Her blood was poisonous to them.

Interesting, I said, leaning against nearest wall.

So, Raum wanted to harness her powers for his own gain?

Together, they were a formidable and ruthless pair.

Scree nodded. Exactly. Raum was also a scientist, intrigued by new and unfamiliar devices, like Jennifer's vambrace. He believed that by draining her life force, he could harness her abilities and ensure his dominance and eternal reign over the realm. Jennifer's unique blood was both his greatest fear and his greatest desire.

"And what about Countess Empusa?" I asked, wanting to get the full picture.

"It seemed that the townspeople's only hope was to overthrow these malevolent rulers and restore balance on their own," I mused, feeling a renewed sense of determination.

She was just as complicit, Scree replied, his eyes hardening.

Indeed, Scree agreed. With Jennifer's abilities and our unwavering resolve, we had a chance to set things right.

Jennifer sighed loudly.

It was a rough adventure. I could've died twice—first from the Prized Bull's wife at the masquerade ball. She could've had me in her clutches if Raum hadn't been so affected by my seduction skills. And the second time was on that blood-sucking machine. Ugh, I felt so dizzy. Thanks Scree, for having my back.

Scree nodded, a hint of a smile on his face. I'm sorry you had to face such dangers, Jennifer, but we made it through together. Speaking of which, where is little Elizabeth?

Jennifer smirked, Oh, she was obsessed with you, Scree.

I promised her I'd come back, and I did. I wonder how she's doing after her parents' death.

Jennifer smiled as she heard the familiar pitter-patter of footsteps approaching, Speak of the wraith and she shall appear.

If Scree hadn’t been made of stone, Elizabeth’s sudden burst of speed as she wrapped around him would’ve surely knocked him off his feet. She managed a small smile. I've been doing what I like, like practicing dancing. I've been helping around the town and learning new things. It's been harder than I thought without my parents, but I'm trying my best.

Just then, a small figure emerged from the shadows, her eyes wide with curiosity and a hint of caution. Scree! Elizabeth called out, her voice filled with tentative joy.

Hello, Elizabeth. How have you been? Ufff...

Jennifer's heart warmed at the sight. You're stronger and braver girl, than you think Elizabeth. We're proud of you.

Elizabeth nodded, her determination shining through despite the challenges. Thank you. I'm just happy you're back Scree. I hope you like a changes we've made to the town?

Scree looked thoughtful. Oh, yes its much safer now. Elizabeth, who is taking care of you now?

Before Elizabeth could respond, a familiar figure stepped forward. It was the man who had suggested using Jennifer's blood. Jennifer's eyes narrowed, and her voice filled with anger. You! You wanted to kill me!

The man nodded, his eyes reflecting genuine remorse and determination. I understand. I won't let her down.

The man raised his hands in a placating gesture but spoke with confidence. I know, and I'm deeply sorry for that. I was desperate and thought it was the only way to save the realm. But I've realized my mistake. Elizabeth was too small to stay alone, and I want to raise her as my own. I will protect her and ensure she grows into a wise and appreciated ruler. This is my way of making amends.

Jennifer and Scree exchanged glances, the tension still present but slightly eased. We'll be watching you, Jennifer said, her voice firm.

Elizabeth clung to Jennifer's side, her eyes wide with both hope and fear. I trust him, she said softly. He's been good to me.

Jennifer's expression softened slightly. For kid's sake, we'll give you a chance. But don't think for a moment that we've forgotten what you did.

As the tension eased, Jennifer and Scree turned their attention back to Elizabeth. Her young face, though marked by loss and hardship, now showed a glimmer of hope.

Jennifer knelt down to her level, her voice gentle. Elizabeth, we have to go now. But remember, you're resilient and determined. We believe that you will be better ruler for this realm that were your parents.

Elizabeth's eyes welled up with tears, but she nodded firmly. Thank you, Jen. Thank you, Scree.

Scree wrapped his arms around Elizabeth in a warm hug. Take care, Elizabeth. We'll always be with you in spirit.

Elizabeth hugged him back tightly, her small frame trembling with emotion. I promise I'll make you proud.

Jennifer smiled, her heart aching but filled with pride. We know you will.

With a final, lingering look, Jennifer and Scree turned towards the nearest portal leading to the Nexus. The familiar glow of the portal beckoned us, a gateway to the next chapter of their journey. Together, we stepped through, the light enveloping us in its embrace.

As we passed through the Nexus once again, a sense of renewal washed over us. We were ready for whatever challenges lay ahead, their bond stronger than ever.

Back in the Nexus, silence wrapped around us. The atmosphere was somber, with an air of anticipation. Scree seemed weary, even for a stone guardian, and Jen glanced back at the portal to Aetha, a hint of concern in her eyes. Could they muster the last remnants of their strength to venture into the Realm of Volca? Despite the exhaustion from chronicling this journey, and perhaps the weariness that comes with reading it, there's an undeniable excitement for the final chapter. The volcanic world of Volca awaited, with its fiery challenges and intense trials. We stood there, readying ourselves for the next step, it was clear that the journey was far from over for them. There was still one last realm to see, and we would face whatever would come our way, their bond unbroken and our resolve unwavering.

The Realm of Volca was as burning and intense as it should have been. The air shimmered with heat, and the ground beneath our feet seemed to pulse with a fiery heartbeat. Scree took a deep breath, feeling the heat even through his stone form. This realm tests even the sturdiest of us, he said, echoing a line familiar to those who journeyed with him.

Jen wiped the sweat from her forehead, already feeling the oppressive heat. Ah, it’s scorching here! Can’t we just take a quick dip back in Aquis?

Don’t you say that you will turn around only because of the heat, but I must admit living in Volca won’t be easy for me either.

Scree nodded, his resolve unwavering. We’ve come too far to turn back now. Let’s keep moving. With that, we pressed forward, ready to face the fiery challenges of Volca. The great, massive temple that was home to the rulers of Volca held darkness in its corners. Though it wasn't specified to be called a temple, it certainly gave off that feeling.

The oil lamps were set upon tall columns, unseen in the darkness, only to be lit once by the torch nearest them, giving a bit of light in the darkness.

"Ohhh, no. I sense something unwelcome coming afterward. Can't you feel it? " My voice reverberates through the ancient depths of the temple

Jen smirked and let out a small chuckle. Tch, relax, buddy. I've got this. Besides, we took care of all the monsters last time we were here.

And here we go again, Jen muttered, shaking her head. Do the djinn really enjoy living in this darkness?

Jen, don't you touch that torch again, Scree warned, his tone firm. Those are no ordinary oil lamps—they hold the essence of Volca's power. We must be cautious.

Our warnings dwindled into silence as torches flared to life, casting light across the shadowed halls

The new light revealed ancient carvings on the walls and faces that had been concealed in the gloom, now watching the intruders with silent, hollow eyes.

Volcanic Beasts or Fire Creatures, their very sight burned into your mind, their presence lingering like a shadow, haunting you until the moment you finally leave this place. Jen's primal form, the Djinn, resonated with the environment, her presence a reminder of the ancient powers. Her dual flaming swords glowed with an intense heat, ready to protect her, Scree, and me from any threats that might arise.

She was surrounded by the creatures. Jen summoned her dual weapons into a single blade and with a powerful sweep, she cut them down. They burned and screamed in agony, but died quickly. The atmosphere began to ease as the doors leading to the throne room opened, and light began to dim here

Scree took a torch and ran towards Jen. Are you alright, Jen?  Yes, I'm alright. Just need a moment.

You need to restore your primal energy, Jen. Absorb what you require.

Scree transformed his energy into Jen, refilling her primary force.

Following the gateway, we made our way through the grand doorway, which led us straight into the Throne Room. Scree lit the nearest oil lamps, casting a warm glow and revealing the room's splendor. We marveled at the intricate details and beauty of the space. This was the realm's core, where Iblis once held his reign. The room was adorned with fiery symbols and a massive throne, exuding an aura of immense power and danger.

You might wonder how I know this place so well. I was once here and saw everything with my own eyes. This time, in the throne, sits a different ruler—Malikel.

Scree stepped forward and bowed slightly. Your Majesty, it is an honor to see you in good health. Malikel's eyes softened as she recognized Scree and Jen.

You return sooner than I expected. It is a surprise to see you once more.

What brings you back to my throne? Speak your purpose.

Your Highness, my companion here, the storyteller, wished to see Volca after we worked so hard to restore balance to the place. Storyteller wanted to delve deeper into the lore and history of the realm itself.

Jen then stepped forward, her voice steady and respectful. Your Highness, I am grateful for freeing me from Iblis's mind control spell. However, I don't want to sit through another history lesson. Scree, I'll step outside for a bit. Rejoin me when you're free—we have a personal matter to settle before we leave.

Scree quickly bowed before Malikel. Your Highness, I apologize for the sudden departure. My friend can be quite... impulsive at times. He then hurried after Jen, calling out, Wait for me, Jen! Please, try not to disturb anyone else!

I took a deep breath and gathered my thoughts. Meanwhile, Malikel turned her attention back to me, sensing the curiosity and quest for knowledge. She smiled gently and nodded. You may address me as Malikel. Formalities are not required between allies. Now, tell me what you seek to learn about the realm. Am, where to begin... Are you the last remaining Djinn in in the realm of Volca , or are the monsters guarding the place a part of your kind as well?

Malikel's expression turned serious as she considered the question. The remaining djinn in Volca are a rare and maintain as ancient race. Many were lost during the battles and the chaos that followed over centuries. As for the creatures guarding the realm, they are not of my kind. They were conjured and controlled by Iblis to maintain his grip on power. Now, with his influence waning, they roam the realm, driven by their own instincts and remnants of his dark magic.

I looked at her with a mix of awe and curiosity. "Wow, I even didn't consider for you being from the few remaining djinn in Volca. How old are you then?"

I hesitated for a moment before asking, "Had there been more than four realms in the Nexus before?" Malikel's expression grew thoughtful. Indeed, there were once more realms within the Nexus, but many were lost to the ravages of time and conflict. The remaining realms are but a fraction of what once existed.

Malikel's eyes reflected a hint of sorrow and wisdom as she responded. I am ancient, far older than many can comprehend. The Volca were once numerous, but time and turmoil have taken their toll. I have seen countless ages pass and realms rise and fall. Now, I carry the weight of our history and the hope for a future for my realm.

I continued, "And does that mean you haven't had children of         your own?"

With a solemn nod, Malikel replied, As for children, in the Volca djinn have a unique way of preserving their legacy. While I have not borne children in the traditional sense, my essence and wisdom are passed on to those who come after me. Our kind perpetuates through the sharing of knowledge and the binding of our spirits to the realm itself.

I pondered her words, feeling the weight of her experiences and the resilience of her spirit. "But still, it means that after Iblis's death, you remained as the last ruler in the Volca? Am I correct?" Malikel nodded solemnly. Yes, you are correct. After Iblis's death, I became the sole ruler, as for the rest, as long as I have a stone heart I will see the upcoming centuries. Thought the path ahead is uncertain, but I have hope. I continued. "After defeating Abaddon and his beast, Nexus returned to its former state of maintenance. Arella is doing everything she can from afar to maintain balance between the realms and the people striving within them. But despite her efforts, no one can remain vigilant forever. One day, chaos will strike again."

Malikel nodded, her eyes reflecting the weight of the conversation. Indeed, Abaddon's defeat was a pivotal moment that altered the course for all of us Arella has been steadfast in her efforts to maintain the proper balance, but as you wisely noted, vigilance cannot be eternal. Chaos is an ever-present force, waiting for an opportunity to resurface.

One force cannot dominate the other, and eventually one will try to consume the other. That’s why the two sides are locked in eternal battle. It was something Iblis brought upon himself, despite my warning. She paused, her gaze intense and determined. We all must remain vigilant and work together to safeguard the realms. The future may be uncertain, but with unity and purpose, we can hope to forge a path towards enduring fragile harmony.

I looked at Malikel and asked, "By the way, how did your husband turned to Abaddon's side? And why did you became Arella's ally?

Malikel's eyes darkened slightly as she recalled the painful memory. My husband, like many others, was seduced by Abaddon's promises of power and dominance. I could see the changes in him—the growing hunger for control, the increasing distance between us, and the dark energy that began to surround him. It was a gradual transformation, but undeniable.

She sighed, her gaze distant. I allied with Arella because Abaddon went too far. I knew that true power lay not in single domination, but in the preservation of the delicate equilibrium that sustains us all. It wasn't an easy decision, but my loyalty to Volca's stability and my commitment to the stability outweighed my personal ties. I hoped that my husband would see reason, but in the end, his choices led him down a path from which there was no return. I don't regret his doom

I felt a deep empathy for her struggle. "I am sorry for your loss. Even if it was necessity it still must have been a hard choice to make, or wasn't it?"

Malikel's expression softened as she regarded me. Thank you for your kind words. But what we once shared had frayed long ago, and the memories of it still weighed heavily on my heart. Choosing to stand against him was not a decision I took lightly it was painful. Yet he wouldn’t change, not even under torture. We stopped him before he could grow stronger.

She sighed softly, her gaze distant. In moments like those, we are reminded that doing what is right often comes with a heavy burden. But it is through these trials that we find our true strength and purpose. I will lend my strength and influence to actions that help pave the way for a brighter future for all. Malikel stood up and walked towards me, her gaze filled with gratitude.

Thank you for your wise words. Indeed, Arella was greatly weakened by Abaddon's power, but her hope rested in Abdizur. She was confident that he would find a hybrid capable of becoming strong enough to stand against Belahzur and Abaddon.

I paused, "Belahzur was ultimately defeated by Abdizur. However, Abaddon's power was still strong enough to corrupt another hybrid. Jennifer still holds hope that the one she was forced to kill in the Nexus will rise again in Mortalis."

Malikel's eyes softened with understanding as she listened. "Indeed, the power of Abaddon was formidable, and his influence reached far and wide. The loss of those we care about in the battle against such darkness is a heavy burden to bear. But mortals have saying "Hope is the last thing that dies in man" its a powerful force, and Jennifer's belief in the possibility of restoration is a testament to her resilience and determination." She placed a hand on my shoulder, her gaze filled with resolve.

A speech to inspire those who continue to protect the realms and strive for a future where harmony prevails over eternal chaos. Together, we can overcome the darkness and ensure that those who were lost did not perish in vain.

As a smile appeared on my face, I heard footsteps approaching. It was Abdizur and Jennifer. I know who Abdizur is, but I won't reveal it to you, dear readers, nor will I disclose whom Jennifer lost in battle. I have already shared enough of the story before and after the chaos was diminished and balance was restored to each realm.

Ahh, Yak, I smell like a burned fish now. Why couldn't you mention that there was a different path, not through the water-filled tunnels? I should have chosen an alternative route to avoid ending up drenched! Jennifer complained, shaking water from her hair and clothes.

I told you to climb up with the rope and then jump to the nearest climb, but you refused because of the ghouls, Abdizur replied.

Ugh, I'm glad that this time it was easier to fight those larger ones. But honestly, how much more of this can we take? I'm tired, soaked, and still feeling the sting of those encounters. Next time, can we please avoid paths filled with water and climbing? Jennifer complained.

You are referring to the Goliath? Jen, given everything you've faced, it's remarkable that you still find the energy to express your frustration. You're still fighting and haven't given up on your inner self control, Abdizur replied.

Alright, alright. In Undine form, it's easier to pass through the water, just like with Wraith form, it's easier to solve tricky puzzles on time. And last time, changing your spirit from one stone figure to another so quickly was irresponsible of you, Scree. Well, we returned your former form back, and I am glad for it. By the way, did you notice how fast time flew by this time, despite all the fighting and challenges we ran trough?

Abdizur looked upon Jennifer with pride. Despite everything, you still remain who you are, Jen—responsible, compassionate, strong-willed, and brave. You risked your own life despite being on the brink of failure, and yet you succeeded. I am proud of you.

Remember, Jenn, the true strength lies not only in our victories but in our willingness to face the impossible and keep moving forward. No matter what challenges lie ahead, know that you have already proven your worth to yourself.

Jen knew that it was time for departure again. Malikel released her hand from my shoulder. In the end, she remained in my memory as one of the most memorable characters in the story. Despite not getting as much attention or time as others, I still value her the most. Come, it's time to return to Nexus and from there back to Mortalis, both of you. Before walking into the gateway leading to Nexus, I took the time to hug Malikel. She wrapped a strong hug around my back, making me feel a bit stuffed up. As she released me, I walked right behind Jenn and Abdizur. It was time to return to reality. Nexus—now at least I have seen with my own eyes how the realms have changed. In the Nexus, a familiar light appeared. Arella was waiting right in front of us.

She spoke words of wisdom that resonated deeply within their hearts:

True strength is not found in the absence of fear, but in the courage to face it. Each of you has shown that even in the darkest moments, hope and resilience can prevail. Remember, the bonds we forge and the sacrifices we make define our legacy. As we prepared to return to Mortalis, Jennifer took a moment to reflect on the journey. The battles fought, the friends lost and found, and the strength discovered within herself were now etched into her being. Come, Abdizur said, his voice filled with newfound resolve. It's time for you yo return home, to one of the world's we fought so hard to protect.

With a final hug, Jennifer glanced back at the Nexus, her heart filled with relieve for the bright future and gratitude for the journey that had brought her here. It was time for me to return as well. After bidding farewell to the beautiful game Primal, I opened my eyes. It was simply a dream, or maybe not.

Why has this text taken so long to write? Well, first things first. The game was complicated to begin with, despite its unique lore and the elements shared in the story. There were still many obstacles to overcome.

It was hard to rewrite the story from the perspective of what could have been if we had gotten Primal 2.

It's hard to accept that SCE Studio Cambridge is no more, and that Primal didn't get as much interest as Medievil in its time. The sequel remained only as early concept art or more likely sketches.

Still, I am proud of myself for finally completing my story of this game. The game is certainly worth your time. Besides some of you can find a certain similarities to Jen, aby you are stubborn or furious or you enjoy a wild dance around your own life story.

In any way it was a pleasure to relive the story once again and for those who love heavy metal music the soundtrack will be certainly liked for. A huge thanks to everyone who shared concept art, behind-the-scenes glimpses, and those few heartfelt fan art inspired by the game.

Remember Enjoy life as you Enjoy game.
